In the Masoretic Text of the Tanakh (Hebrew Bible), Parashah Chayei Sarah has three "open portion" (, ''petuchah'') divisions (roughly equivalent to paragraphs, often abbreviated with the Hebrew letter (''peh'')). Parashah Chayei Sarah has one "closed portion" (, ''setumah'') division (abbreviated with the Hebrew letter (''samekh'')) within the "open portion" (, ''petuchah'') division of the second (, ''aliyah''). The long first open portion (, ''petuchah'') spans the first five readings (, ''aliyot''). The second open portion (, ''petuchah'') coincides with the sixth reading (, ''aliyah'').
